Rum from Jamaica
After the Austro-Prussian victory over Denmark in 1864, the three small islands in the Caribbean became foreign territory for Flensburg merchants. The latter had to look elsewhere and started sailing to Jamaica under the flag of the North German Confederation.
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean and at that time was a British crown colony. The Flensburg merchants then imported Flensburg pure rum from Jamaica – the ”German flavoured rum” especially developed there for the German market and taste.
Today, Jamaican rum is traded through Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, London and other cities.
