Hurray, the rum is back!
For the first time in 15 years, Jamaican rum reached Flensburg in November 1949.
The Amsterdam rum trading house E. A. Scheer delivered 25,000 litres of the liquid gold from the Caribbean and 9,000 litres of arrack from Batavia with the motor vessel “Arak”.
Despite the rain, a large gathering of people welcomed the high-percentage cargo in the port with jubilation, flags and cheering. Fully dressed, the ship tied up next to the Piet Henningsen pub.
The Dutch and German press reported on the event. The Flensburg distillers were delighted, as they were finally able to fill their own barrels – some of which were empty by then – with the new rum before the Christmas season and then refine it.
